Natural Beauty of San Cristobal

I had intended to stay only one week.

Yet, nearly three weeks had gone passed before I was ready to say goodbye to San Cristobal de las Casas, and subsequently Mexico. During those three weeks, I met some new friends, dined at delicious (and not so delicious) restaurants, became a regular at El Horno Magico (French baguettes!) and learned a bit more Spanish.

Despite the fact that San Cristobal was about 10 degrees too cold for my comfort, I loved the city.

San Cristobal offers so many things to do, as I described here, here, and here. Yet, I have a final round-up of San Cristobal adventures for you.

Martin and I ended up taking Spanish classes for a week at Instituto de Jovel. I learned so much and yet I have so much more to learn. Yet, now I can speak in simple past tense! 🙂 (kind of…)

We spent most of our time in San Cristobal at Posada del Abuelito, which is one of the nicest hostels we’ve visited ever. HOT shower. Beautiful kitchen. Make reservations because they fill up fast.

Moxviquil is a beautiful hiking trail and next to it is a garden where an American expat is cataloguing many of the plants unique to Chiapas.

El Arcotete is a beautiful park, perfect for a Sunday afternoon picnic with the family. It was a bit more of a walk than we had expected – it ended up being about 10 miles round trip. Nevertheless, the Arcotete was beautiful and worth the time and effort. (You can take a taxi there for 80 pesos each way.)

We stumbled into Los Chapulines for lunch one day and were pleasantly surprised at its delicious food. Martin inadvertently ordered crickets (he couldn’t reasist the “Super Mega Taco!”) and found them a little too strange for him. I had the best vegan pizza (although they called it something else…). So good. We sent some other travelers there, and they enjoyed it too.

So, pack a warm jacket, a good pair of walking shoes, and a sense of adventure. San Cristobal awaits!
