Finally! A Hot Bath.

Fuentes Georgina

The water vapor clouded the air. Children jumped into the pools, making large splashes. I gingerly dipped my toes into the big pool.

Nope. Too hot! Even for me.

I ran to the second pool, my feet already ice cold from the stone ground. I slipped into the warm water. Ah, relief. My body was so cold, the second warm pool felt sweltering. I felt like my body was made of glass and was about to shatter from the extreme temperature difference.

An old man started splashing people nearby, and I gave him a dirty look.

Hot water from the big pool poured into the second pool through two tubes creating the best shower you can find in Guatemala. The water was fresh, not salty, and it made my hair silky smooth.

I relaxed in the warm water while watching a grandmother teach her 12-year-old granddaughter how to swim.

Eventually, I was warm enough to venture into the scalding hot big pool. As I slowly slid into the steaming water, my skin tingled as if my blood was boiling. Just a few minutes was all I needed, and I headed back to the warm second pool.

After my bath in the hot springs, I was thirsty! So I drank my water and ordered a michelada at the bar. A michelada is decidedly a Guatemalan drink – at least according to Guatemalans. It consists of beer, tomato juice, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder and salt. Just like a bloody mary, micheladas vary by bartender. This one was perfect. I was toasty warm and enjoying a tangy, salty beer.
